(3/11: I had to change the blog title because this post was getting too many spam comments.)
In high school, a friend told me that she wasn't going to buy clothes for a year because her older sister did it and said it was liberating and saved her a ton of money. I couldn't even imagine going an entire year without purchasing F21 skinnies or a thrift store dress. However, I've been looking at my closet lately and thinking I'm relatively happy with it. So No (Buying) Clothes 2013 it is!
EXCEPTIONS:
++If I get gift cards or birthday money, I can use it to buy clothes.
++I can make myself clothes. I need to learn to use my sewing machine.
++If I become pregnant, I am allowed to buy maternity clothes. Especially pants. I went for a long time without wearing maternity pants when I was pregnant with Ezra, but they are SO worth it.
++If I find an amazing gray/white/black tee for a good price I can get it because I have been looking for two years.
++I can buy accessories like shoes, necklaces, etc.
++If there is just the most amazing dress or skirt at a thrift store, I am allowed to buy it because those things don't happen every day. But the limit is one every three months.
Guys, this is going to be really hard for me because I really enjoy clothes and thrift stores and mixing and matching patterns and textures.
Wish me luck. Jeff is behind this 100%. Probably because it means we won't go to the mall very often.
However, if you are not making this goal, please check out these fashion blogs. I found these cute girls right after I decided to do this and I almost took it back because they have my dream closets. Finally found fashion bloggers that I love and I'm not going to buy clothes for a year. Figures.

You know I really wish I could have a goal like that but I just know it wouldn't work for me.

But what if I hate my closet? Can I dub this year "buy all the clothes 2013"? You're an inspiration.
ReplyDeleteWHAT ABOUT TO BUY A BRIDESMAIDS DRESS?!
ReplyDeleteHaha. But really, I wish I was confident enough in my closet and had enough self-control to do this! I know I have so many clothes, and a lot that I rarely wear, yet I never feel like I have ANYTHING cute to wear. Even though you're not buying clothes I bet you'll come up with some really neat new combos from your closet! You are so great!
Umm...sorry, Katie. There is no way I can break my rules for something like your WEDDING. JK JK. I can't believe I forgot that exception. I had already given myself permission to do that. I'm really just hoping to go six months, but the goal is a year. I'm kind of scared. I love clothes.
ReplyDeleteI too am doing a no spend on clothes in 2013, including no shoes. Fortunately I am a competent sewer/dressmaker so can up-cycle something old into a new outfit quite easily, so I wont get too bored! I will follow your blog with interest....good luck
ReplyDeleteLove it! I am trying to limit myself to only buying clothing items I really need! This will be hard for me too because I LOVE thrifting. I will check back to your blog regularly to see how you're doing and to keep myself in check! :)
